The Work

Alison Baker brings bold color and feminist humor to her sculptures, collages and prints. When working in the Overpass Projects studio, her ColorAid collages are iterated into dynamic screen printed landscapes in editions and monotype. Surreal terrains of limp rock formations, fuzzy mounds and promising arches, these works are decorative and cheeky. Feminist humor thrives in Baker's visual language- not surprising that a gender told to “be quiet and look pretty” will take to the visually comedic. Frustrated, resigned, devoted, serviced and serving, mundane and fascinating. Baker presents ‘pink collar’ malaise wrapped in dollar store cellophane and neon colored cleaning foams. In dialogue with her other works, the skillful transformation from college to three dimensional sculpture and then back to the two dimensions in the screen printed works is a gratifying journey.
